Chapter 1
*Why is Kirsti not afraid of the soldiers?
The soldier called "the Giraffe" by Ellen told Kirsti "She is pretty, like my own little girl.

*How would you have felt if you had been Annemarie when the soldiers spoke to her? Why? I would have felt nervous that Kirsti was going to tell them a whole bunch of stuff. So that the Nazis would kill them or torture
them.



Chapter 2

Yes and no, I would only do it if it was a good leader, but if he/she was bad I wouldn't.

Chapter 4

  • 1st chapter was Why are you running? Ellen and Annemarie were racing to school want solders stopped them. 2nd was who is the man the rides past, it was the king. 3rd was called "Where is Mrs. Hirsch?" She was the lady who sold buttons but when the Nazis came she was Jewish so her shop was shut down.
  • The title of this chapter is "It Will Be a Long Night." Why was it a long night?
  • She was scared about their family's security and the her family was hoping the Nazis didn't come in the middle of the night.
  • Why does Ellen spend the night with Annemarie?
  • The Rosen family heard that all Jews would be taken away by the Nazis. Peter took in Ellen's parents and Ellen would stay with the Johansens.

  • The faked death of an invented person named Great-aunt Birte causes a new issue to surface for Annemarie and when they talk about her bravery she questions her own bravery.She also is worried when he says "Tomorrow will be a good day for fishing."

  • Yes, she is just making that up because she doesn't want the other kids to know.

  • I think the mourners are Mama and Peter. They are the Jewish people who are trying to escape to Sweden.

  • He tells her that because he does not wants her to fear the truth; if she did know the truth she would be scared, but not couragous.

  • She tells the Nazis that the doctor said the she should keep it closed because the Great Aunt Birte had typus and it still may be contagious.

  • I think Number the stars is the signifcance of the Nazis numbering each one of Jewish people the with stars that says Jude. It means something to the Jews because they believed they were the chosen people of God and that He would take care of them.




  • Chapter 11
    1. What is in the casket?
  • It was stuffed with clothing and folded blankets.
    2. Why did Peter insist upon giving the baby some medicine?
  • If he did not give the baby the medicine he could have started crying and alerted the soldiers and killed them.
    3. One possible theme for this novel is that it is easier for people to be brave if they do not know everything. Use an incident that happened in this novel to prove this.
  • When Peter gave the package to Mrs. Rosin and didn't say what it is.

  • On page 94 She tried not to worry about Mrs. Rosen going to on the boat and being scared. She also realized that the Rosens were going to go to Sweden

  • Yes, because the soldiers could be waiting.

  • She thinks the something bad happened like she was killed, but relived to see her laying there with a broken ankle and not a lost life.

  • He mother broke her ankle so she can't get there steadily or fast.

  • Like we discussed before it is easier for people to be brave if they do not know everything. If she did know she could worry about it or something.

  • Annemarie is little red riding hood and the Nazis were the wolf

  • She is almost to the end of trail to the harbor, when suddenly 4 Nazis and 2 dogs stop her.

  • I was shocked and i could not believe they would not just leave her alone.

  • Yes, he told it was alright and everything was find, but did not say where everyone is.

  • He said that brave means "not thinking about dangers". Yes, because she offered to risk her life since her mother broke her leg and could not deliver the package.

  • Chapter 17
    1. This chapter takes place two years later after the war. How do the Danish people include their Jewish neighbors in the celebration?
  • They kept the apartment rooms clean and hung banners,flags,kept the plants healthy, and dusted the furniture and polished the candlesticks for the Jews who fled.
    2. How did Peter die? How did Lise really die?
  • Since Peter was in Resistance the found him and executed him in the public square in Ryvangen. Lise was also in the Resistance; the Nazis saw her running (since they found in their meeting place) and was hit and killed.
